Tree Farm - Sycamores

She thinks it's titled Sycamore. The plot is about a father & daughter.
They have a tree farm & one of them is a collector of trees (she thinks
varieties of Sycamores). The daughter says that she will marry the man who
can name all these tree varieties. An itinerant worker comes through who
slowly tells her stories which contain these trees. The patron thinks it's
set in Northern California or Australia, but she really wasn't sure. She
saw the book in Borders last year and remembers it as a hardback or trade
paperback having a white cover with a green stripe across the top. She is
certain it's an adult book.
Does this ring a bell with anyone? It sure sounds familar but we can't
place it and would appreciate whatever help the great minds of this list can
provide.

Maybe not sycamores but eucalyptus?
Eucalyptus: A Novel by Murray Bail
Amazon review begins -"Once upon a time, on a property in western New South
Wales, a man named Holland plants hundreds of varieties of eucalyptus
trees, then decrees that only the suitor who can name each and every one of
them will be worthy to marry his beautiful daughter, Ellen."
I haven't read it but kept the review because it sounded like it might make
a good book discussion book.
