Patron heard an NPR interviewee (recent, Fresh Air?) describe one of their favorite books as "A Swedish book called 'Longboats' that is a lot like the Lord of the Rings". A search of npr.org and the Fiction_L archives has been unsuccessful.

Nick,

That Swedish book also doesn't show up on a Lexis-Nexis search using several
combinations of possible terms. I would try asking the patron for further
details -- was it NPR for sure? About when? Swedish, not "Scandinavian"?
etc. Might take further clues to locate this one.

Hi. I vonder iv dis could be "The Long Ships" by Frans Gunnar
Bengtsson, written in the mid 1950s. (Excuse my poor imitation of
Scandanavian accent. -- my Gramma talked dat vay somedimes.)

The Tolkien aspect is that a portion of the book the Viking crew are
searching for a fabulous gold bell -- they encounter all sort of peril,
etc along the way. The movie of the same name starring Richard
Widmark was based on that portion of the novel.

A good thick novel.
