Coming of age Scrooge

I have a patron looking for adult/young adult fiction with a coming of age
theme where the protagonist is relatively well-off, self absorbed, and
through whatever circumstance realizes how lucky he is. Kind of Christmas
Carol Scrooge, but more modern. Any help would be appreciated greatly!
Thanks,

Try Paul Fleischman's The Whirligig. Privileged teenager accidentally
causes death of a teenage girl, whose mother requests that he travel to the
four corners of the continental U.S. and build a whirligig in her
daughter's memory at each place. Boy journeys via bus, and has ephiphanies
throughout. Good for 7th grade and up; also appealing to adults. It's
very short (ca. 125 pages).

Gee, I guess I'll third it! As soon as I saw this reply, I thought it was
the perfect suggestion for this query. A wonderful book--and definitely
not "just YA."
