Biography Readers' Advisory
|
FROM: Lucy Lockley <[removed]@mail.win.org>
REC'D: 3/19/02, 5:33 PM
I am supposed to be doing a presentation on how to assist patrons wishing
readers' advisory help in the area of biographies. This, of course, in
'not' a regular genre such as mystery, romance, science fiction, etc. I
found some biography lists on the 'Fiction_L Booklists Menu' and have done
some searching out on "Novelist" and "What Do I Read Next?". But, I am
still having some difficulty in putting my presentation
together. Following are some questions that I could use help with and
would appreciate any assistance offered.
Is there an award given for the best biography? If, so what is it called
and is there a tool (book, website, etc.) where I can find a compiled list
of past winners and nominees?
Is there such a thing as a list of biographies which read like
fiction? Not fictionalized biographies but actual biographies. If so,
where?
If there is not such a list, can anyone suggest titles for such a list? (I
will compile and post out to Fiction_L.)
Other than biographical indexes, journal reviews of biographies, and other
reference tools which have bibliographies of biographies listed at the end
of the biographical articles (i.e. 'Encyclopedia of World Biography' from
McGraw Hill) what tools could be used for answering a biography readers'
advisory question such as "I just read this biography on (place name here)
OR by (place author's name here), could you suggest another like it (not
necessarily about the same person)?"
Again, any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I have enjoyed a number of biographies that "read like fiction":
Tender at the Bone by Ruth Riechl
Comfort Me with Apples by Ruth Riechel
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
'Tis by Frank McCourt
The Color of Water by James McBride
Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year by Ann Lamott
A Good Enough Daughter by Alix Kates Schulman
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (about Morris Schwartz)
A Year in Provence, Encore Provence, and Toujours Provence by Peter Mayle
Two or Three Things I Know For Sure by Dorothy Allison
Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen by Dorothy Allison
and my FAVORITE:
How Reading Changed My Life by Anna Quindlen
Mary Boyden
Readers' Advisory Librarian
Carmel Clay Public Library
P.S. Oprah said that Ice Bound by Jerri Nielsen reads like fiction. I
haven't read it myself, but several patrons have agreed with her on this.

I was intrigued by the title, *Memoirs of an Ex-prom Queen.* Our library has a book by that title, but it is fiction, and is written by Shulman. Are you possibly thinking of a different title?
Thanks,
Lisa
