A patron stopped by the desk today looking for a sci
fi title. The only problem is that she could only
remember 2 things about the book. 1) There is a
superior race called "aristoids" or something like
that. 2) SOmething about a box filled with spikes /
daggars in which the person inside must "will" himself
not to bleed.The person develops excellent mind / body
control this way.

I don't recall anything about a box with spikes, but could the "aristoids" be the Arisians of E.E. Smith's Lensman series?

This sounds like Catherine Asaro's work. The Aristos are a sadistic race
who crave the pain of a telepath. This might be Catch the Lightning,
published in 1996 by Tor Books.

I haven't read the other two books that have been suggested; they might be
better matches. Just in case they're not the books your patron is looking
for, I thought I'd mention the similarities to Frank Herbert's Dune. The
main character, Paul, is from the powerful Atreides family, and there is a
scene in which he must keep his hand inside a box, regardless of the pain it
causes him, in order to prove himself worthy.

Teresa, our resident Sci-Fi expert, suggests it might be, Aristoi (1992) by
Walter Jon Williams. The title refers to, "...special kind of human [that]
has evolved - men and women who can handle both the virtual and the realized
world" and who are the benevolent rulers of mankind.
