I have a patron who is looking for a book by a Russian author and she can
not
remember the title or when it was published.

The story concerns Satan and takes place throughout Russia. Does anyone
know this
book offhand?

I think the story may be entitled "Viy" and the author
is Nikolai Gogol. This is an educated guess. Truly

If I recall the story correctly, the critter in "Viy" is a vampire,
not Satan. My guess is that the client is thinking of THE MASTER
AND MARGARITA by Mikhail Bulgakov (there are several English
translations).

Definately not Gogol's Viy, it is a vampire, as noted by someone else. I
also vote for Bulgakov's MASTER AND MARGARITA. in case this helps identify
the book: it also includes a large black cat that talks, a poet, a
disgraced author (the "Master") and the lady of the title, who plays hostess
at Satan's ball. It has many direct references to Faust and takes place
mostly in Moscow. There are many references to housing shortages, currency
speculation and governmental corruption, all of which made it very unpopular
with the Soviet government. There was a new translation a few years ago.
It is very funny...
