did not turn up a likely candidate for such a novel. I did, however, find
reference to three Ming *dramatic works* with "purple" in the title. For
what it may be worth--
Shao Ts'an (fl. mid-fifteenth century), "Tzu hsiang-nang" (THE PURPLE
PERFUME-POUCH)
T'ang Hsien-tsu (155-1617), "Tzu-hsiao chi" (THE PURPLE FLUTE), which he
later rewrote as "Tzu-ch'ai chi" (THE PURPLE HAIRPIN).
