Nora Roberts
Romance, romantic suspense (category and single title)
Elizabeth Lowell
Romance and romantic suspense. Very intense.
Georgette Heyer
The direct descendent (metaphorically speaking) of Jane Austen. Heyer
turned out a remarkable body of regency romance, virtually inventing the
genre - at least, in this century.
Mary Jo Putney
The direct descendent (again, metaphorically) of Ms. Heyer. Putney began
with wonderful regency novels, branched out into historical, and has now
ventured into contemporary. Very intense, superb at characterization, not
shy at dealing with "issues" such as alcoholism. Also, her novellas are
splendid.
Linda Howard
The author of many intense relaltionship romances. Now also writing
harder-edged romantic suspense. Particular favorites: Sarah's Child;
Midnight Rainbow; Mackenzie's Mountain; White Lies.
Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall.
Very intense relationship books. One of her most memorable: Jackson Rule
(w/a Dinah McCall)
Ruth Glick w/a Rebecca York.
Has authored 80 novels, many of which are romantic suspense. One of her
most poignant is the remarkable Nowhere Man, a 43 Light Street book for
Harlequin Intrigue.
Cherry Adair
Author of the compelling romantic suspense novel, Kiss and Tell.
Lyn Ellis
Began her career with the splendid Dear John, based on a woman writing to
someone in the armed services during Desert Storm. She began 2001 with
Annalee and the Lawman, which was a page-turner from beginning to end.
Kay Hooper
Terrific at interweaving the supernatural/magical elements into her
stories.
Emilie Richards
Relationship books (some very intense, with gritty, hard-edged
background); now also writing mainstream women's fiction.
Rachel Lee
I've been reading her work ever since her first "Conard County" book.
Dallas Shulze
Wonderful romantic relationship books.
Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle/Amanda Quick
What's not to like?
Justine Davis
Has authored many wonderful romantic releationship books, esp. the series
starting with "Stevie's Chase."
Celeste DeBlasis
Her "The Tiger's Woman" may be the best historical (American) written,
IMHO.
Jennifer Crusie
I believe she has had much to do with starting the trend toward romantic
comedy.
Of course, the authors and titles above just scratch the surface. And before
I sign off, I'd have to add Mary Stewart, whose Madam, Will You Talk? got me
(and many of my colleagues) started on the road to romance writing.
Binnie Syril Braunstein

I don't read romances often, but I like the Medieval ones of Roberta Gellis.
I get a strong feel for the time, and I like the strong, intelligent women
they feature.

another long time favorite- one that is just too good to ignore. Laura London

Yes, she is; it's a sequel to Libby's London Merchant, and should be out
later this year (not certain of exact date). She's also mused online about
writing a "Whatever happened to...?" sequel for Miss Whittier Makes a
List.
These two couldn't appear fast enough for me. CK is, to borrow phrases
from Regency cant, a "diamond of the first water," a "True Nonpareil," a
writer "of the first stare"...you get the idea...
Impatiently,
Nora
