adult and YA titles mixed together?
* do you call the collection Graphic Novels? or Graphic Fiction (to
include short stories). any other name ?
* some titles in the 741.5 may fall in the GN area..what criteria do
use in such cases?

We catalog most graphic novels as adult and young adult fiction. We also
have a
few graphic novels such as Pokemon cataloged as juvenile fiction. A few of our
branches display the young adult graphic novels in a separate section
within the
young adult collection just as they would popular series titles. Others
interfile them within the young adult fiction collection. Adult graphic novels
are shelved within adult fiction.
Patrons can search for "graphic novels" as a subject heading and when these
items are shelved together in one area, they are displayed as "graphic novels."
Usually we consider a graphic novel a story that stands alone or is a
compilation of stories or series that may have originally appeared in
periodical
comic book form.
Compilations of cartoons or comic strips from newspapers or magazines are
usually cataloged in the 741.5 section.
Recently librarians have discussed the issue of where to shelve graphic novels
and what to call them on the "Graphic Novels in Libraries" listserv. If
interested in adding graphic novels to the library collection, I would suggest
signing up for this discussion list. You can subscribe to the Graphic Novels
list by sending a blank e-mail

Deciding whether a particular item is to be FIC or classed in 741.5x is based on a number of factors--the author's intent if we can determine this, plus the general appearance, but most especially was this previously published as for example "issues 4 through 9 of..."--in the teeney tiny print somewhere-- If it was first published as comic book issues it gets the 741.5 even if it calls itself a graphic novel.
Hope that helps,
Sarah

due to the popularity of graphic novels and the fact that more titles are
published in this"genre", we are in the process of designating a special
shelving area for this collection(adult & young adult) and we need to know
how other libraries have dealt with this collection. Our main
questions are:
* do you have a separate shelving location for GN, and if you do, are
adult and YA titles mixed together?
* do you call the collection Graphic Novels? or Graphic Fiction (to

We try to keep the adult graphic novel collection away from
young adult because the material is a little more adult,
but the teens are welcome to check the adult graphic novels
out and do so regularly.
As for cataloging, usually the graphic novels are assigned
numbers such as 741.5 or 791 and occasionally Fiction. It
doesn't matter since all are given a sticker which places
them in the Graphic Novel section where they are not kept
in ANY order (dang impossible).
Hope this helps,
Kaite

We have both a YA collection and a High School collection in our library (different
floors), so graphic collections for younger audiences such as Asterix go in YA and
more mature collections such as Sandman go in High School.
> * do you call the collection Graphic Novels? or Graphic Fiction (to

We have one Graphic Novel collection, and that is in the High School collection.
Those works appropriate for younger teens go in the 740's in the YA collection.

We did pull out a few things such as Maus when we started the graphic novel
collection. Now we do have some overlap between YA and High School, but not
much. Any collections of comic strips such as Garfield were left in the 740's , whether
adult or YA.
Our Tech department is good about bringing stuff that is *really* adult to my attention,
and I try to get a look at things that I am unsure of before they are cataloged. Our
High School collection is aimed at older teens, but middle schoolers can and do check
out materials. I love the Hernandez brothers, but I'm not sure I want to face the parent
of a twelve year old who says they got that book at the library! I've only rejected two
items in three years.
Best,
RSJ
