Does anyone subscribe to the Chapter-A-Day service? It's a company that
e-mails a few chapters of books to a list of subscribers, with the
intent
of whetting their appetite for reading. Apparently these subscribers
would
most likely be people who don't normally have time to read, but who
check
e-mail every day for at least 5 minutes... Chapter-A-Day will customize
the service so that your library name appears as the "provider" of the
service, and I think you can also post local library events/programs and

send them to the list of subscribers, too. If anybody out there in
Fiction-L land has any information or experiences to share, let me
know--it's something my library is considering, but we'd like to know if

others have boldly gone before us...

The Preble County Library in Eaton, Ohio signed up
with the Chapter-A-Day service last month. So far we
haven't had many people sign up for it, but we are
doing some serious promoting in our branches and on
our website. I think it's a great idea.

The Maricopa County Library District has had the Chapter-a-day service for
quite some time. What I like most about it is that it has several genre
clubs, such as Good News, Teen, Business, and I just received e-mail from
the service announcing that they are beginning a fiction club as well. I
signed myself up for the original, teen and good news clubs. I use it
professionally and personally. We also use it as a selection tool - if a
book shows up in one of clubs that we don't own we buy copies of it
immediately. I have not had much response from our customers. Heavy
promotion is necessary to sell it to your customers.

We've offered Chapter-A-Day for about a year now. I agree with the
comments that heavy promotion is needed--we even had a lovely, big
newspaper spread, among other things, and still only a very slowly growing
list of users. I think the excerpts are a tad choppy--but it does give you
a flavor of the title. One wonderful thing--they obtained rights to two
books whose authors were coming to our big annual book fair--and ran them
the two weeks before the event, giving us a chance to say things like "If
you like this book, come to the library next Sunday to meet the author."

Our library has offered the service for over a year, and we like it very
much. I'm not sure how many of our patrons use it, but the staff seems
very enthusiastic about it. Periodically the company sends a schedule of
what titles are being featured so that you can make sure you own the
titles, which is very helpful. I don't really see a downside to it, even
if patrons are slow to pick it up. The service is free, if the reader
starts a book they don't like, they can delete the email without opening
it. With a lot of promotion, it can be, as Martha Stewart puts it, A Good
Thing!

Our library provides access to it on our page. I don't know how many
patrons have signed up, but I really enjoy receiving it. Even if I don't go
on to read the whole book, at least I've been exposed to it and might be
able to recommend it to patrons. Because it exposes you to a variety of
books you might not otherwise read, it's a great readers' advisory tool.

Incidentally, if anyone on the list wants to try it, you don't have to go
through a library's link. You can also go directly to
http://www.chapteraday.com to sign up to receive 5 minutes worth of reading
per day. A new book is started each week. It's free.

Hi Tish
Chicago Public Library has had the service for over a year now and we have a
growing number of people who use it. I haven't noticed that it has generated
huge holds. There are a variety of different clubs but we only have the
original So far it's a nice service offer and we don't have to do much but
publicize it.
