British woman and ex-POW father

Patron want to find the title and author of a book with the following
storyline: A British woman writer/reporter/journalist travel to the
countryside where she meets an older man, a recluse living on a cluttered
house. He shows her a board game he's created that uses squares and
stones. The man was a prisoner in a Japanese POW camp. The woman learns
that he is her father (!). Author was probably a woman; story
written/takes place in late 80s or 90s. Book was on the "library" shelf at
patron's workplace. Average length.
We have tried Novelist, Book Review Digest, our magazine database and the
Web, all to no avail. Beginning to wonder if it may have been a mass
market paperback.
Thanks in advance!
