My patron, age 24- 25, is looking for a book that was on the bestseller list
in 1997 or 1998. He remembers very few details about the book because he
only read the first chapter. He said it was contemporary fiction that
looked at life from another perspective. The title was a man's name
beginning with an H or a G. He had a paperback edition with a dark
cover--grayish, purplish, black. He was in last night but came back today
because he was told "Joy can find it." Well......um.....Can anybody help

so if the "G or H" part can be trusted, you could at least come up with
a short list of possibilities...
