Sister of My Heart by Chitra Divakaruni is the story of two girls, born
in the same house at the same time in Calcutta. The novel recounts
their growing up together, how their arranged marriages come about and
how these marriages turn out. It is a beautiful story of friendship,
and wonderfully written. I recommend it to people all the time, and my
22-year-old daughter thinks it's the best book she's ever read.
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry is another treasure--a sweeping tale
of life in Bombay, with the tragedies of life among the poor and
downtrodden, but hope found in the kindnesses offered by friends and by
strangers. Mistry is a beautiful and really talented writer.
