fantasy with few details

Here's what we know: it's a fantasy title, may have
been published in the past 10 years. Paperback. Plot
involves a medieval world with wizards, werewolves,
and a magic black cloth. The son of the wizard must
rescue his fiancee who is in danger. If any of this
sounds remotely familiar, could you give us a hand?
We've tried Novelist and assorted Fantasy websites
with no luck.
Thanks!

It sounds remotely familiar and is twinging my recollection
for Mary Frances Zambremo's books; the first is _A Plague
of Sorcerors_ and the second is _Journeyman Wizard_.
The main character is Jermyn, a newly apprenticed wizard
with a skunk for a familiar; and in the second book
he does rescue his girlfriend and I distinctly remember
some sort of magical cloak (possibly made of black cloth).
The last was published in 1994 and was obviously intended
to be the second in a trilogy - does anyone know what happened?
I found these books about two years ago and have been
itching for the third ever since.
I would think they would definitely appeal to the HP crowd.

I don't know if there's a story behind non-appearance of hypothetical
third volume (and haven't read the series), but Ms. Zambreno teaches
at Elmhurst College in the greater Chicago area, so if anyone wants to
email her and ask...

Also, American Fantasy Press is publishing her first short story collection
any day now: INVISIBLE PLEASURES.
