I'm trying to remember the author/title of a collection of short stories
by a female author recently published (in the last 1-2 years) to recommend
to a patron. The collection was, I think, on the bestseller list for a
while. I thought the author's first name was Laurie or Lori or... One of
the stories I remember the author wrote about losing a child or being in
the ER for an emergency with a young child (baby). Anyone remember what
I'm referring to?

Could the author you're referring to be Laurie Colwin? She was a magnificent
short story writer, writing with humor and poignancy - and died at, I
believe, age 48, of a heart condition.

Some of her more recent titles are:

Could you be thinking of the 1998 collection "Birds of America" by
Lorrie Moore? It contains a story called "People Like That Are the
Only People Here" about a mother whose baby is very ill; the story
was orginally published in the January 27, 1997 issue of the New
Yorker.

Lorrie Moore has published short stories and is well known, but I'm
not familiar with that particular story.
