I'm sure this is the Arthur Upfield series with Napoleon Bonaparte aka "Bony". They have been around for a while and are set in Australia.

By now you've probably had the answer, but your patron is thinking of Arthur
W. Upfield's very *long* (about 30 vol.) series of mysteries about Napoleon
"Bony" Bonaparte, a half-aboriginal ranger adept at reading the "book of the
bush." My mother has read some of them and says they're quite good.
