I'm sure this is the Arthur Upfield series with Napoleon Bonaparte aka "Bony". They have been around for a while and are set in Australia.

I know I'm tooting my own horn here but this is the kind of question that
GENREFLECTING makes really easy to answer because it lists many detectives by
country. Under Crime-Police Detectives-Australia one will find the Inspector
Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte books are written by Arthur Upfield.

The author's last name begins with a "U"--it's Arthur W. Upfield, who write about a half-caste police inspector named Napoleon Bonaparte.

By now you've probably had the answer, but your patron is thinking of Arthur
W. Upfield's very *long* (about 30 vol.) series of mysteries about Napoleon
"Bony" Bonaparte, a half-aboriginal ranger adept at reading the "book of the
bush." My mother has read some of them and says they're quite good.
