I'm not sure if anyone here can help me with this or not, but here goes. A
local school librarian called me this morning with a question from one of
the senior English teachers. He wants to know what the term "Congresswater"
means--it appears in chapter 26 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I've
checked Benet's, Brewer's, the OED, a couple dictionaries of American Lit.,
and done some Internet searches with no results. I vaguely remember
something about this from when I studied Huck Finn in college, but that's
been longer ago than I care to admit!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

According to a footnote in the 1962 Norton critical edition, Congress-water is "mineral water from the Congress Spring at Saratoga, New York".

According to the Webster's Rev. Unabridged Dictionary (I found a
on line version through Google), Congress water is a "saline
mineral water from Congress spring at Saratogo, the state of New
York."

Don't know if that's what Twain was referring to or not, but might
give you a start. BYE!
