I have a patron looking for a YA book she read some time ago. (At least 10
years). It was about a group of 12 boys sent to either an orphanage or
reform school, and the people who ran the school sent them to explore an
underground world. The oldest boy had been a thief, she remembers.

The boys end up helping an underground civilization, and find a way to get
free of the men who run the school during the course of the book.

The book was Science Fiction, and was broken into a number of sections or
books, like a serial that had been printed in a book. It was very thick, and
had a red cover with a picture of the boys in an open vehicle on the front.
It had a few pen and ink type illustrations in it.

Hope someone recognizes it, and thanks in advance.
