Eighteenth century, actually. The most obvious top-of-the-head match
would be CANDIDE by Voltaire--an intelligent but innocent observer
thrust out into the (then) "modern" world, undergoes picaresque
adventures, is generally horrified with people and institutions he
encounters, and at last retreats back to closest approximation of
original pastoral existence as he can manage, sadder but wiser.
