I would suggest "A River Runs Through It" by Norman Maclean.

Subject: Title suggestions
I have a foreign patron who wants to learn about contemporary American
literature.
He just read A Widow of One Year by John Irving and enjoyed the relationship
between the characters. I have several authors to suggest to him:
Kingsolver, Sue Miller, Reynolds Price, Dorothy Allison, etc. Does anyone
have any other suggestions? Of course, he is a typical patron. When he
filled out our Reader's Advisory form he also said his other favorite
authors
were Eco, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Tolkien and he also enjoyed
historical,
fantasy and contemporary stories. I decided to first focus on John Irving
read-a-likes. I don't usually read this type of story so any help will be
appreciated. I am checking What Do I Read Next and Novelist.
Thanks,

I would add Anne Tyler and Gail Godwin to your list. Both of these authors
explore relationships between all kinds of people.

For a very nice relationship book, I'd like to suggest Jane's House by Robert
Kimmel Smith.
