Patron is looking for what she describes as sports romances. She is
thinking of something with sort of the same feel as the Kevin Costner
Hollywood version of "For Love of the Game" (although no one who actually
read that book would describe it quite that way). I can come up with tons
of guy-type sports books and even more mysteries, but she is looking for
something where the relationship (ideally a romantic one) is the main focus,
but the characters are athletes or the setting is sports-related. Any
takers on this one? If there is enough response, I will be happy to compile
and post.

Most of her romances feature sports stars - pro football and golf if I'm
remembering correctly. Her latest just came out in hardcover - _This Heart
of Mine_....

There is also a Silhouette Desire (I forget the author title, but I'll hunt
for it) where the heroine is a pro tennis player and the hero a journalist.
There's also one where the hero is a tennis player. Rebecca York has written
WHAT CHILD IS THIS?, a 43 Light Street Harlequin Intrigue where the hero is a
baseball player. Patricia McLinn wrote HOOPS, a basketball-based Silhouette
Special Edition, where the hero is a basketball coach. In Marabel Morgan's
Silhouette Desire, JUST JOE, in which a
tender-hearted quarterback falls for woman from abusive background who is
terrified of men. In Muriel Jensen's A CAROL CHRISTMAS (Harlequin American),
a former baseball player attempts to get his life back together - and ends up
adopting five underprivileged orphans - and the lady that takes care of them.
In CKim ates' THE WISHING TREE, (Silhouette Special Edition) the mother of a
child with kidney disease gets involved with a superstar athlete (who, she
wrongly believes, is too full of himself to care about anyone else).
I'm sure there are many other examples.

OK these aren't actually romances (or any kind of romances) but they are
sports books where the relationships are the most important thing and they
are good books:
Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger is a Damon Runyon type story about a
boy who is looking for a father figure and picks a most unlikely baseball
player candidate.
Castro's Curve Ball - is about that Castro and - I lied - this one does
have a romance.
There is a really lovely story about a golfer (sports writer) whose Father
has cancer and they take one last trip to Scotland and try to play on the
Old Course at St. Andrews. I think it is called something like Last
Round(s) but I can't get on the net to check for sure.

To recap the original request: something with sort of the same feel as the
Kevin Costner Hollywood version of "For Love of the Game". Not guy-type
sports books or mysteries featuring sports themes, but something where the
relationship (ideally a romantic one) is the main focus, but the characters
are athletes or the setting is sports-related.

Kim Cates -- THE WISHING TREE, (Silhouette Special Edition) the mother of a
child with kidney disease gets involved with a superstar athlete (who, she
wrongly believes, is too full of himself to care about anyone else).
Frank Deford -- "Everybody's All-American" Much of the book focuses on the
relationship between an aging football star and his wife. The novel was
made into a film starring Dennis Quaid and Jessica Lange.
E. Lynn Harris -- Not a Day Goes By, by E. Lynn Harris. Main male character
is a former
football player who now owns a sports management agency (XJI, Ex Jocks
Incorporated).
Muriel Jensen -- A CAROL CHRISTMAS (Harlequin American), a former baseball
player attempts to get his life back together - and ends up adopting five
underprivileged orphans - and the lady that takes care of them.
Tabitha King --One on One, has romance and is a lot about the sport of
basketball.
Steve Kluger -- Last Days of Summer is a Damon Runyon type story about a boy
who is looking for a father figure and picks a most unlikely baseball player
candidate.
Peter Lefcourt -- THE DREYFUS AFFAIR, in which two major league baseball
players fall in love. It was very well doneIf you want to include gay
romance.
Elizabeth Lowell -- Summer Games
Patricia McLinn -- HOOPS, a basketball-based Silhouette Special Edition,
where the hero is a basketball coach.
Marabel Morgan --JUST JOE (Silhouette Desire), in which atender-hearted
quarterback falls for woman from abusive background who is terrified of men.
Jake Page -- Demon State - a love story about a professional Albuquerque
basketball team
Susan Elizabeth Phillips -- Most of her romances feature sports stars - pro
football and golf. Her latest just came out in hardcover - _This Heart of
Mine_....
Tim Wendel -- Castro's Curveball - is about that Castro and does have a
romance.
Joan Wolf -- Beloved Stranger features a professional baseball player.
Rebecca York -- What Child Is This? a 43 Light Street Harlequin Intrigue
where the hero is a
baseball player.
Other Suggestons from Binnie: There is also a Silhouette Desire (I forget
the author title, but I'll hunt for it) where the heroine is a pro tennis
player and the hero a journalist.
There's also one where the hero is a tennis player.

One that belatedly occurs to me and is not on the list is Karen Joy
Fowler's THE SWEETHEART SEASON (Holt, 1996), about a woman's barnstorming
baseball team in the late 1940s Midwest; judging from blurb on the book
and reviews I've seen, romance(s) are among the elements involved.
