Fron the Phyllis Eisenstein web site (http://www.bl.com/eisenstein/#SS):
When Cray Ormoru decides to become a knight like his father instead of a
sorcerer like his
mother, he sets out to claim his paternal heritage, not realizing that his
parentage is much more
complicated than he thinks. The universe he lives in is full of magical
spiders, walking plants, and
demon slaves who come from dimensions made of Fire, Air, Water, and Ice,
and Cray encounters
all of these and more in his quest to reunite his family and find his true
place in the scheme of things.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? A book published
probably 10-20 years ago, thought to be titled
"Sorceress' Son" (but can't find that title anywhere),
involving a sorceress' son (surprise surprise) who
fights demons by breaking open magical rings. The
book also involves a spider, though I don't believe
the spider talks.

Phyllis's first book was for Arkham House, but it was BORN TO EXILE (1978),
a short story collection about a minstrel who can (but prefers not to)
teleport. SORCEROR'S SON was her first-published real novel (1979), but
it was a Del Rey paperback. (And it probably is the book the client
was looking for.)
If client is especially fond of giant talking spider sidekick stories,
Robert Vardeman has a series involving such; titles don't come to
mind but I could find them. . . . (Bob is a very nice guy but a
self-described hack writer whose stuff I rarely read.)

I have this book at home. It's definitely the title the patron is looking for.
