My book discussion group will be discussing "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone" on March 29. This is an adult group, so I am looking for discussion
questions geared more towards adults. In searching the Internet, I have
found some great lesson plans to use with kids, and I am adapting some of
those questions, but I was wondering if any of you have done this book with
adults and might be willing to share your questions with me.

Hi Vicki,
Our book discussion group did this last December and the first thing I had
them talk about was the religious controversy over the book: was it
justified? Was the book in any way blasphemous? Why did they think the
controversy had been generated? Were there other books they were familiar
with that were controversial? Why were they controversial?

Other questions:
1. Was the connection between Harry's wand and Voldemort's wand
important? Are there future implications?
2. Discuss Harry's dream from his first night at Hogwart's.
3. Discuss the details that Rowling puts into everything, e.g., why
are there precisely 142 staircases at Hogwart's?
4. Discuss the Mirror of Desire. What was Harry's desire? Why was it
important. What did the inscription around the Mirror say?
5. Why was the Sorcerer's Stone not a wonderful thing?

Of course, the first part of the discussion was the most lively, but
everyone had a good time and agreed they would probably read the rest of the
books.

When we did this in my book discussion group, we also talked about:
--will this book become a "classic,"? In what ways is it similar or not
similar to other books that have stood the test of time? What is it's
special appeal?
--what are some of the literary allusions used in the book?
We also discussed the language, especially names
