If you watch, you will notice that of the hundreds of "Reviews" Harriet
Klausner posts on the internet each year, that all are positive and read
more like summaries than reviews. They are useful if you want to know what
an author's new book is about, but I don't consider them to be critical at
all.

That's true, Ricki. In my naivete, I assumed she only reviewed books she
liked and not the ones she disliked but when I put that in print, it sounds
pretty dumb. Thanks for the "heads-up."

Harriet posts her reviews on BookBrowser as well as several other websites.
I have actually met her and can attest to the fact that she exists. She is a
compulsive speed reader which, depending on how you look at it, is either a
blessing or a curse. If she dislikes a book she does not 'review' it.
Readers either lover her or hate her. We get lots of email from our
visitors about her reviews. Some thank us for posting information before
the books are released so that they can get their library holds in early.
New authors are very thankful to be reviewed at all and Harriet makes a
point of writing about first time authors. Others write us saying that
Harriet's purple prose and uncritical analysis (or lack of analysis) lowers
the standard of reviewing. It has been our position over the years (5 of
them, yikes!) that her reviews help people find books that they may not have
otherwise found. As we have full text searching on the site her reviews
help people find books when they only have a few bits of info - for instance
a patron remembers that the mystery takes place in Hillside Manor but can't
recall anything else. A search of Hillside Manor brings up Harriet's reviews
of Mary Daheim's books. There have been several threads on several listservs
over the years debating the value of Harriet's reviews. I feel that her
reviews are a bit like using Amazon for RA - not enough by themselves but
helpful when augmented.
