Help! Our local high school has assigned students to read a book of
fiction set in the United States between 1870 and 1900. We have so far
come up with only a few: O Pioneers by Willa Cather, Country of the
Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett, and The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.
Can anyone help? I knew if anyone could, it would be the members of this
list.
Thanks in advance,

Try some of Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane and asome of Jack London. , There are also bibs of historical fiction available. There isan oldie by Lyle Wright, AMERICAN FICTION, 1876 - 1900 published around 1966 that is still viable. You could also check one of the books on timelines and see who was writing when. Also llook in a survey book of American literature.

Melissa,
If you have access to What Do Young Adults Read Next? (a great resource
published by Gale) there is a Time Period Index broken down by decade.
Currently there are three volumes with the fourth due out in August. Each
volume covers different titles. Let me know if you can't get your hands on
this and I can fax you the lists from volumes 1 and 2. We don't have volume
3 yet.
Another helpful resource might be American Historical Fiction (published by
Oryx). Annotated entries are organized by time period. Books especially
suited to young adults (considered as grades 9 -12) are designated with a
special symbol.

On the fringes of the time period is The Diary of Mattie Spenser by Sandra Dallas which begins in 1865 and continues through Mattie's life... and set in the 1890's is One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus; a fascinating novel based on a real event...

As I have said many times, get hold of any copy you can of the McKinley
Bibliographies volume entitled "Historical Fiction," by Hannah Logasa and
successors. It is arranged chronolgically by era, and focuses on books
suitable for HS and JHS. You will find many excellent titles in it.

Many of the works of Douglas C. Jones would suit this criterion, as would
vast quantities of other writers' Westerns. (See my list of authors on a
previous thread.)
