Quick! I need a few suggestions for really GOOD adult mysteries involving
the search for buried treasure, for our April mystery reading group. I've
already selected Landscape of Lies (Watson) and need to two more titles. Do
not have to be contemporary.
TIA!

Martha:
"Thunderhead" by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston (authors of "Relic") is
about an archaeolgical expedition looking for Coronado's Lost City of Gold.
It
has plenty of action. Another old favorite of mine is "Crocodile on the
Sandbank" by Elizabeth Peters. Most of her Amelia Peabody mysteries are set
in
Egypt during archaeological excavations.

Does Rumer Godden's CHINA COURT have a mystery angle about a long-buried
valuable book....or some such?? I have the vaguest recollection that there
was something
valuable in a grave....maybe you have copies (it was re-released a few years
ago in a
nice trade pb edition, now out of print) that you could follow this up with.

2) For an erudite group, the following book would not meet the definition of
"very good," but, for a conservative group which likes inspirational fiction,
it might...
It's called <The Book of Hours,> by T. Davis Bunn--has a hidden treasure, a
romance, and a Mitfordian sensibility. Here's some plot summary info from
amazon.com: "From the first words, I was riveted by The Book of Hours. It's
the story of a man who has lost his wife and who is, himself, recovering from
a tropical disease. His life is further wrecked when he goes to claim an
eccentric mansion that was left to him by his wife's aunt, only to find that
there are exorbitant outstanding death taxes on it. He finds his first
friendship in a lady doctor who resides in Rose Cottage, what used to be the
gatekeeper's house on the mansion's grounds. She assists him when he finds a
letter left to him by the old aunt, which both apologizes to him for her past
behavior and gives him the first of many clues to a puzzle that might
eventually save him from the poor house."

Since you don't specify "novel-length," I'll note a couple of short
classics: "The Gold Bug" by Poe and "The Musgrave Ritual" by Doyle.
