A girl in the house with the garden

Hi, all-
I'm looking for a title to a (possible) classic that my patron readas a class
assignment in high school. We already know that it is NOT The Secret Garden by
Frances Hodgson Burnett. Here's the description she gave me.
A girl is orphaned, and comes to live with a family, possibly her aunt and
uncle. The house where she lives has a garden in the back with lovely flowers
and a gazing ball. There is a lot of time spent in the text about the details
of the flowers and of what the girl compares them to (such as soldiers
marching, etc.)
Another girl, possibly the cousin of our protagonist, lives in the house as
well, but is an invalid. There is a boy who may be a caretaker of the garden.
The invalid girl resents/hates the orphan girl, possibly because of jealousy
over the boy. At some point in the book, the invalid girl commits suicide by
pouring water on herself and opening her windows wide, so that in the morning
she is found very ill with pneumonia and subsequently dies.
The patron has searched extensively for this book, but cannot remember the
title. She feels that the title may include one of the following words or
phrases- menagerie, looking glass, gazing ball.
This is driving us crazy- any help or suggestions you can give us would be most
highly appreciated!
Thanks-
Deborah Roy [removed]@skyenet.net)

I think it is Emily-Jane by Patrica Clapp. If I remember right, there
is actually a spooky element to this. Both little girls aren't actually
alive - one of them is a ghost. Haven't read it in years, but I loved
it and it is CREEPY.
