We have a patron who is looking for a sad World War II musical that she
believes came out shortly after "The Sound of Music" (1965). She said
it takes place mostly in Europe, some of the time on a train, and
involves a star-crossed love relationship in which the woman dies.
We've tried the 'Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever' and some general
internet searches to no avail. Does this plot sound familiar to
anyone? Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.

Aside from the musical part this sounds like "Julia" with Vanessa Redgrave
and Jane Fonda.

That sounds a lot like Madame Butterfly/ Miss Saigon. Madame Butterfly is a
tragic story of an American solder and a Japanese woman in WWII-- but it's
an opera. Miss. Saigon is the same story made into a musical. the only
difference is that instead of WWII, it takes place in the Vietnam war.
At the end, the women kill themselves so their children can live with their
fathers (the solders) in America.
I don't know if either of them were made into movies though..
hope that helped!
>>
But Miss Saigon is, I believe, a product of the 80's, at least - not 1965.
