The patron is looking for some very old books that included stories or tales
about New England. The stories he remembers were about the Great Molasses
Disaster; Dugout Dan who lived underground in Vermont; and a Round Schoolhouse
that was built by a convicted highway man.
He's actually trying to get a hold of these books, but I couldn't find
anything like what he was asking for. I found some information on the
Internet, but no titles or authors. Do these stories sound familiar to
anyone?

Good luck!
this is a clipping from the webpage devoted to the disaster
http://www.uoguelph.ca/~sjheeta/disaster/
"In 1919, a molasses tank in Boston exploded, flooding the streets with an
eight-foot wave of molasses. It killed 21 people, crumpled the steel support
of an elevated train, and knocked over a fire station. Here is a story of
that disaster.

Hampshire"

The Molasses Disaster occurred in Boston in 1919. There is are many websites
devoted to it. I found them via dogpile.com, using Molasses Disaster as a
search key. The first set of websites was from <GoTo>; a huge amount in
Google. Happy hunting!

The Round Schoolhouse is located in Vermont. I found it via dogpile, which
directed me to google, then to the "Let Me Show You Vermont" website.
URL: http://www.letmeshowyouvermont.com/30-1.htm
The description below is from that website:
In another 2.8 miles (6.7 from VT 30) you will find the infamous Round
Schoolhouse.
Built in 1822, the teacher was one Dr. John Wilson, who also designed the
brick building. There were 60 students (show sat on benches) in this tiny
building.
After Wilson's death, it was discovered that he had been a wanted highwayman
from Scotland known as "Lightfoot". Legend says that he had the schoolhouse
built round so that he could observe anyone approaching the building.
This is the only round schoolhouse in the country.

Could he possibly be thinking of Mary E. Wilkins Freeman? She wrote in the
late 19th-early 20th C.'s ("very old"), and was a New Englander whose short
stories focused on her natal region.
