You watch, that subject line will turn out to be completely misleading!

A patron is asking for the following novel:

Probably a male author, definitely a popular one (she said, "The kind of book you see
in airports".)

A woman returns to her hometown, probably because a relative has died. She
becomes involved in a murder investigation, and romantically (though with lots of initial
conflict) with the town sherriff or at least a local cop.

An art store selling Native American work features prominently.

Written in the late 1990s.

This sounds like FOOL'S PUZZLE, the first Benni Harper mystery by Earlene
Fowler and published about 1994. Amazon describes Benni's job as being
"curator for the town's folk-art museum" in a California town. She does
indeed become involved with the town police chief. A really fun series.
