Ok, it's dazzle time. I have lots of clues. I need author and title.

Protagonist is a raquetball-playing widow from Long Island who witnesses a
murder in Amsterdam. Her father is a children's author and bases one of his
characters on the protagonist.

Hmm. Well, I wouldn't call it a mystery exactly, and it's squash, not
racquetball, but maybe A Widow for One Year by John Irving?

Off the top of my head, this plot sounds suspiciously like that of Widow for

Joan, I think you are right about this. In the book, Widow for One Year by John Irving, Ruth Coe (or Cole?) is an author who goes to Amsterdam and witnesses a prostitute getting murdered. Her father, Ted, is a writer of children's books. He is a graduate of Exeter, and builds a raquetball court n the upstairs of the garage, I think. He and Ruth play each other, as well as other people. She doesn't become a widow until maybe the last third of the book. And then she remarries and lives in Vermont.
