A friend of mine recalls a book that was in the Children's section of the
public library about 15-20 years ago. It's not a picture book and it's not a
Young Adult book - so I guess it's a Juvenile novel.
The cover was blue with a picture of a girl on the front. She had long hair
and was lying on the sidewalk because she had fallen off of her bike.
The story takes place in the 30's during the Depression. It covers one
summer. One part of story is about the girl and her friend wondering what the
symbols on the telephone poles mean. They later find out that this is how the
hobos communicate with each other regarding which houses/families are willing
to offer food or money, etc. Also, during the summer, the girl receives a
bicycle but it's not the one that she really wanted.
any ideas on this one?
