I have been asked to create a list of Western genre authors identifying by
sub-genre if possible. I've searched the Fiction_L archives as well as
several web sites. Either I'm not finding enough information, or I face
information overload!
It doesn't help that what I know about the Western genre you could put in a
thimble. Help! Beyond L'Amour, Gray, and Brand I'm lost!
Thanks for any leads --- I'll post the completed list.

NoveList breaks Westerns into subgenres when you use the Explore Fiction
link. It may be a bit of the information overload, but it does give you
several authors with the subgenre.
You could also try reference books such as "What Western Do I Read Next?"
or "Genreflecting."

Ralph Compton has the 10+ volume Trail Drive series as
well as several standalone novels.
William W. Johnstone also writes a mountain man
series, and at least 2 other series-- The Last
Gunfighter and Blood Bond.
Jason Manning, Cameron Judd (touted as a L'Amour
successor early on by his publisher), Jack Ballas,
Johnny Quarles Gary McCarthy and Charles West are also
good bets.
Suzann Ledbetter and Jerrie Hurd write Western fiction
with female protagonists. Rosanne Bittner has written
dozens of Western romances with strong historical
background.
Joseph Meek's MOUNTAIN JACK PIKE and books by Ralph
Hayes are mountain man series in the style of Tabor
Evans' LONGARM series.
For Western historical fiction that would appeal to
fans of genre fiction, try THE RED HEART and
SIGN-TALKER by James Alexander Thom, LONESOME DOVE by
Larry McMurtry.

Could you clarify this just a tad? Westerns are a major area of expertise
here...if I know more of what you're after, I can probably help.
