I was asked by a teacher of English for a list of trilogies for her senior
high school class. The ones I've come up with follow here, but I'm
wondering what major/obvious/classic mainstream trilogies I might have
missed. In addition to the ones I've listed, I've also come across some
science fiction ones, so I don't need those. I also don't want trilogies
that have companion volumes! (In my view, those are no longer trilogies,
but what do I know!)
Many thanks to you all, and I'll post a final compilation once I get one to
post.
THE LIST SO FAR (which currently includes non-fiction/drama as well as
fiction):
Adams, Douglas. Hitchhiker's Guide
Asimov, Isaac. Foundation
Banks, Lynne Reid. Jane Graham
Burgess, Anthony. Malayan trilogy
Davies, Robertson. Salterton
Deptford
Deighton, Len. Game, set and match
Dos Passos, John. USA etc.
Doyle, Roddy. Barrytown
Golding, William. To the Ends of the Earth
McCarthy, Cormac. Border trilogy.
Nordhoff, Charles. The Bounty
Pargeter, Edith. The Heaven Tree
Saint-Exupery, Antoine de. Airman's Odyssey
Sophocles. Oedipus plays
Thanks again.

Well, the HITCHIKER'S GUIDE "trilogy" is currently at five volumes and
a short story, so by the "companion volumes" rules that no longer
qualifies. And Asimov's "Foundation trilogy" was such for several
decades, but late in his career Asimov (unfortunately, in most views)
decided to link this "robot" and "foundation" novels into one future
history and wrote additional prequels and sequels to knit them together,
so that no longer qualifies either. (And more recently other authors
have produced pastiches set in that future history, further muddying
the waters.)
In case you decide you do want further examples from the sf/f fields,
many could be pulled out from the "series" lists on the Locus/Contento
sites:
http://www.locusmag.com/index/a10.html
plus comparable lists for the 1999 and 2000 supplements to the basic
list.
Sigh--threads on fat books followed by a thread on trilogies; two
of my least favorite things in rapid succession....

Nope; first was THE CAVES OF STEEL, second THE NAKED SUN (books 1954 and
1957 respectively; the third was THE ROBOTS OF DAWN (1983). But there
followed a fourth, ROBOTS AND EMPIRE (1985), which tied this series into
the "Foundation" series," and for that matter the "Robotics" novels were
already tied into the short stories in I, ROBOT and some of the short
stories in THE REST OF THE ROBOTS, so by the "companion volumes disqualify
things" rule this was out even before 1985. (And more recently there
was a long series of "sharecropped" pbs by other authors under the
title ROBOT CITY which were also tied into Asimov's continuity.)

REC'D: 2/5/01, 1:25 PM
Jane Roberts Wood: "The Train to Estelline", "A Place Called Sweet Shrub", and "Dance a Little Longer." YA historical series about a young woman in a small Texas town.
Larry McMurtry's Thalia trilogy: "The Last Picture Show", "Texasville", and "Duane's Depressed". McMurtry takes on a lot of adult issues, but if your students can handle Cormac McCarthy they can probably handle McMurtry.
C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy: "Out of the Silent Planet", "Perelandra", and "That Hideous Strength." Not exactly typical SF, so I don't know whether it would have appeared in the SF series that you've already collected.
Then of course there's Tolkien, the originator (for good or ill) of the massive fantasy trilogy tradition. I personally loved the "Lord of the Rings", but found many of its imitators to be pretty thin gruel, with the exception of Mary Stewart's Merlin books ("The Crystal Cave", "The Hollow Hills", and "The Last Enchantment".) Both of these trilogies have prequels or sequels, but they can stand on their own.

I also would like to thank Brad Scott and Dusty Gres for their help on
the Dr. Goat question.
I've been giving RA workshops for the last few weeks to the staff in our
library system, and have been praising this listserv to the skies!
Many thanks, once again.
Maureen
