Subject: Thick Books
I've had a request from a patron who wanted "thick books." She said she's
such an avid reader and if she picks up a slim or medium-sized book she
just reads it too fast. If she has a thick book in front of her then she
is more prone to savor and take longer to read. She is not looking for
classics (War & Peace, etc.) nor is she interested in thick romances or
historical fiction (she said she's read plenty of that already).
Basically thick, contemporary fiction. Your suggestions are appreciated.

From the Corner of His Eye by Koontz (622 pages)
Widow for One Year by Irving (537 pages)
A Fine Balance by Mistry (603 pages)
Secret History by Tartt (523 pages)
I Know This Much is True by Lamb (901 pages)
Sophie's Choice by Styron (515 pages)
Admittedly, Sophie's Choice is historical, but it is set in this century, so she might like it anyway. Of the others, I've read and loved Irving's novel, Tartt's novel, and Fine Balance comes highly recommended from another reader. My brother loved the Koontz, insists I need to read it.

Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: the tale of Lata's--and
her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra's--attempts to find a suitable boy for Lata,
through love or through exacting maternal appraisal. Set in the early
1950s in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of
crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four
large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their
lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic
society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people
caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and
reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling
violence

I can empathize with the patron - I often find myself looking for new things
to read that are either quite thick or are a trilogy/series, so that if I
enjoy it there's plenty to keep me occupied. But then, I read a lot of
SF/F, which gives me a deep well to draw from...

Stephen King's The Stand is certainly thick.
Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear, et al.
Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series.
Nora Roberts' contemporaries such as Montana Sky, Heart of the Sea
Diane Chamberlain's books such as Brass Ring, The Courage Tree, etc.
There are just a few that come to mind.

I wince that they like long books, but don't
want to read War and Peace or Anna Karenina or
Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamozov or
The Idiot or Middlemarch. Classics schmassics,
these are SUCH GREAT READS! See if you can't
trick them - there's a new Anna Karenina
translation by Pevear and Volakhonsky with a real
sexy cover. A lot of readers I know have been so
pleasantly surprised by these novels. The vast
oevre of Anthony Trollope would keep them busy a
good long while, too.

Second that; a classic *is* a classic because it has met the Test of Time.
Also, a vast number of "thick books," as becomes plain by perusing the
history of these posts, *are* "genre"--historicals, romances, sf & fantasy.
Isn't there some diplomatic way to persuade the reader to broaden her
horizons?

A couple of notes... I edited the suggestions based on the fact that my
patron did not want historical fiction or science fiction and, wasn't much
of a romance reader either. And, remember she didn't want the
standard "thick" classics, War & Peace, etc. (not because she wouldn't
read them as someone suggested, but because she already had.) Also, she
really did want "thick" books so I used 600 pages or more as the criterion
for inclusion. If an author had more than one title that was "thick" I didn't
include every title. If you don't like my editing because it was so
specifically tailored to this particular patron's request, you'll have to
go to the archives for the full discussion. Again-- many, many thanks
