A patron is looking for a science fiction short story she read 20 or more
years ago. It takes place in the future on a vastly overcrowded earth.
In order for people to leave the teeming cities, they must pass through a
long tunnel which, at random intervals, closes off and eliminates those
inside, as a means of keeping the population down. The story shows 2
carloads of people, one a happy-go-lucky family (Italian, maybe?) and the
other a contentious group. The happy group gets caught in the tunnel
while the fighting ones just escape it.
Any takers? I'll bet someone out there knows this one.
Thanks!

Yes.
It's "The Tunnel Ahead" by Alice Glaser (1929- ). It first appeared
in the November 1961 issue of THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE
FICTION; the story introduction there said that Glaser was New York
city based, an editorial assistant on ESQUIRE magazine, and that
while she had previously published articles, this was her first
fiction sale.
The story has been reprinted in the following anthologies:
The 7th Annual of the Year’s Best S-F, ed. Judith Merril,
Simon & Schuster, 1962
Voyages: Scenarios for a Ship Called Earth, ed. Rob Sauer,
Ballantine, 1971
As Tomorrow Becomes Today, ed. Charles W. Sullivan,
Prentice-Hall, 1974
Urban Horrors, ed. William F. Nolan & Martin H. Greenberg,
Dark Harvest, 1990
Glaser never published anything else in the sf/f field.
