Hi all, I hope there is someone out there that can help me find this book
for my patron. The story involves an Irish woman whose son is a priest in
China. Having a son that is a priest adds to her standing in the community
which she enjoys and exploits. The priest while in China falls in love and
leaves the priesthood. The Irish woman's daughter (the priest's sister)
knows about the scandal but keeps it from the mother. The book involves her
efforts to protect the mother. The patron believes she read it in the last
five years or so. Thanks in advance, Melanie

This sounds like Maeve Binchy's Echoes. It's not the main plot of the story,
sort of a side plot.
