Here are two lesser known Irish authors.

Walter Keady (born & raised in Ireland - now lives in NY) has two novels
both set in rural Ireland of the mid 20th century (Mary McGreevy and
Celibates & Other Lovers) and both are fabulous! Also, Brendon O'Carroll,
wrote the Agnes Brown trilogy, set in Dublin, which are very very funny (The
Mammy, The Chisellers, & The Granny). He lives in Ireland.

Romance author Nora Roberts is of Irish descent, and many of her novels have
characters from Irish backgrounds, and/or use Irish settings. Her first book
was Irish Thoroughbred. One of her latest is Irish Rebel. There are many
examples in between. Let me know off list if you'd like specifics.

I don't believe three of my favorites have been mentioned yet:

"Flann O'Brien" (pseud. of Brian O'Nolan), especially for THE THIRD
POLICEMAN

Mervyn Wall, for THE UNFORTUNATE FURSEY and THE RETURN OF FURSEY

Spike Milligan, for PUCKOON (and even more for lots of his other
books, especially the GOON SHOW scripts, but others are either not
fiction or only arguably so--e.g. a recent series of book-length
parodies such as WUTHERING HEIGHTS ACCORDING TO SPIKE MILLIGAN)
