A patron really enjoyed J. Edwin Carter's book, Living is Forever [1990].
She especially liked the "combination of religion/spirituality with science
fiction" and would like similar titles. Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow
came to mind, but I'm not sure that fills the bill. The patron also
mentioned "the characters surviving the destruction of earth" which made me
think apocalyptic novels might be suitable.
Our catalog lists "Survivalism-Fiction" as a subject heading for the Carter
book and the only other fiction title in our catalog with that subject is
William W. Johnstone's Slaughter in the Ashes.
I'm hoping that some of you knowledgeable folks will know if either of these
titles are readalikes. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome as
well.
This unfamiliar territory for me.

(The ASHES stuff is schlock violence-and-gore "men's adventure" stuff.
Spirituality is the last thing on the minds of any of the characters.)

Walter Miller's "A Canticle for Leibowitz" and M.K. Wren's "A Gift upon the Shore" both deal with religion/spirituality in a post-apocalyptic setting. Some other possibilities that blend religion and sf:
* Robert J. Sawyer: "Calculating God" and others.
* C.S. Lewis's "Space Trilogy", beginning with "Out of the Silent Planet"
* "Time, Like an Ever-rolling Stream", by Judith Moffett.
* Many of Gene Wolfe's books have spiritual undertones, especially the "Book of the Long Sun" series, beginning with "Nightside the Long Sun".
* James Morrow's "Only Begotten Daughter", "Towing Jehovah", and others. (Be aware that Morrow's books are somewhat satirical about conventional religious beliefs.)

Gordon R. Dickson's "Soldier, Ask Not." It's not postapocalyptic but it does deal with a conflict between a newsman and a futuristic cult-like religion, set in the same sf setting as Dickson's "Dorsai" novels.

I'd also like to add my first contribution. For science fiction with
strong religious overtones, and (nearly) world ending events, I'd highly
recommend David Feintuch's "Hope" series. Midshipman's Hope, Challenger's
Hope, Prisoner's Hope and Fisherman's Hope. I think he's got at least two
more in this series now, but I haven't read them yet.

I've been waiting for someone else to mention this one, as I can't remember
the title of the book (here we go...). A few months ago, it was a selection
on the Chapter-a-Day online bookclub, and I thought it was called something
like 'Death Star,' but can't find that title anywhere. A star is shining
over Israel, and a team of scientists, accompanied by a Christian theologian
and an Amherst philosopher are sent to investigate. There is also war in
Israel, with divine intervention. Hope someone can supply the title!
