Mario Pei wrote a novel called "Swords of [or possibly for] Charlemagne,"
which would definitely fit your patron's time period.
Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions" is about a WW2-era Dane who
gets thrown back to Carolingian times and discovers that he is in fact the
paladin Ogier the Dane. It's a fantasy but gives plausible explanations for
things like werewolves and troll-gold.

Carolingian Resaissance. He prefers the location to be France, possibly
Britain. He does not want romances, stories about King Arthur or
Charlemagne, or mysteries (e.g. Brother Cadfael-12th century.) Does
anybody have any suggestions? He likes historical authentic fiction. He
has read, and likes, Gillian Bradshaw and Hella Haase's In A Dark Wood
Wandering.

Carolingian Frankish dynasties (476-887) encompasses what scholars call
the Early Middle Ages.
