There is a title, which I could have sworn was called MOTHER OF A THOUSAND
DAUGHTERS (but apparently isn't) that deals with a young woman going to San
Francisco [removed]@ the turn of the century. She's sent by a missionary group and
her task is to help free young Chinese girls sold to brothels. This is not
to be confused with The Golden Age, a time travel novel that deals with the
same subject, by Lisa Goldstien (I think). The former title is straight
historical and may be by an inspirational publisher. It was quite good...

For the record, I think the title you describe above as the one you
*don't* want is THE GOLDEN NINETIES by Lisa Mason (Bantam 1995). Mason
also did a earlier "time travel to San Franciso in the sixties" novel
called SUMMER OF LOVE (1994).
