This isn't the short story the person was seeking, but along those lines is
Daniel Pinkwater's book Author's Day (or Author's Visit). An author goes to
visit a school to discover they all think he he wrote a popular book that he
didn't write. The kids have made headbands like that book's main character,
the welcome sign is wrong, etc. He keeps saying "But I didn't write that
book, I wrote this book" and nobody listens to him.

Reading it, you just know this has actually happened to Pinkwater. (If it
was a newer book, I would say that a school probably got him a Dav Pilkey
mixed up)
