I have a request from an acquaintence of mine
I left the public library world a few
years ago and work at a community college so I feel a bit out
of the fiction loop. So, I need your help.
My friend has been reading quite a few of the Oprah books and
now she is looking for smart, literary books but that have sex scenes.
She doesn't like books that fit the Romance genre and enjoys the
the quality of the Oprah book list but wants to read some books that
are "good stories but have some sex in them...none of these books have
sex!" that's a direct quote from her. I also get the impression that she
wants consensual sex scenes and maybe books that are not quite as
dark as some of the Oprah list books. I'm not sure if she want's a love
story
involved or just sex. I thought of Layover by lisa zeidner; but, im
not exactly sure if that's what she's after because that book isn't exactly
light.
I thought maybe Elinor Lipman, Judith Freeman, Jonis Agee...but then
i can't even remember if those books have sex scenes.
I searched the fiction-L archives to no avail.
Thanks for your help and I will post a list when all the suggestions are in.

I thought the original query ruled out the romance genre. (See below)
Because Nora Roberts (and Sandra Brown, and Linda Howard, and Elizabeth
Lowell) among many others, have wonderful love scenes - but all take place
within the framerwork of the romance genre.
And then of course there's the historical romance -

Did someone already suggest THE FEAST OF LOVE by Charles Baxter? A series
of
characters tell the author their love stories, many have sex scenes,
everything
I've read so far is consensual (I'm halfway through the book).

Hi, if you don't know already the "Book Forager" web site, I think you could
like to give it a try:
http://www.branching-out.net/forager/
Among different caracteristics bars on the panel (Happy/Sad,
Expected/Unpredictable, Optimistic/Bleak...), I moved the "sex bar" (No
Sex/Sex) to the right and I got these titles :
Crossing the border : tales of erotic ambiguity, by Lisa Tuttle
Invisible life, by E.Lynn Harris
Footsucker, by Geoff Nicholson
Catching shellfish between the tides, by Rosalyn Chissick
The last bus : Poems, by Paul Summers
The long falling, by Keith Ridgway
Eating Cake, by Stella Duffy
Dear dead person, by Benjamin Weissman
The bird of night, by Susan Hill
And for each title, you get "More like this...", "Where next" and "Reader
comment". You can require books with up to four different caracteristics.

If you're still interested, Ann, you can go to BookBrowser and just type
in "sex" in the Search box. You'll then get a lot of titles to choose
from. I reviewed one in particular, Lip Service, that I thought was
quite well written, and it certainly had sex in it; I gave the book a
very positive review.
