The two by Cobb that he read were Seastrike and Choosers of the Slain. I
have discovered a third, Sea Fighter, that we don't own but that I will
interloan (or just purchase).
Any other ideas?

David Poyer: most of his are naval in nature
Patrick Robinson: again, he writes moslty modern naval stuff)
Larry Bond: Red Phoenix
Tom Clancy: Red Storm Rising and Hunt for Red October
Charles D. Taylor: Boomer and Show of Force
Timothy Rizzi: The Phalanx Dragon, Strike of the Cobra, and Eagles of Fire
(mostly Naval Air Power)
If modern combat in general fits the bill, you could add -
Harold Coyle (ground combat): series that starts with Team Yankee
Stephen Coonts (air combat): series starting with Flight of the Intruder
Ralph Peters (ground): Bravo Romeo, Red Army, and The War in 2020
Dean Ing (air technology): The Ransom of Black Stealth One, The Nemesis
Mission, and Butcher Bird.
There is also a lot of stuff from different time periods (WWII especially)
that might appeal if the emphasis is on just naval combat or combat in
general.
