Our library system received a grant which we have dedicated to large print.
Since this can be a 'touchy' subject, I would appreciate any suggestions
about how to promote the collection. Signs, slogans, bookmarks, press
releases--any information would be GREATLY appreciated!

Maybe build something around the word "zoom." Before you think I'm whacked
out - think about the little icon on your computer tool bar that lets you
zoom in on something and view at larger magnification. Speaking of which -
you could use the word magnification in some way, too.

Debra -

Re: your large type promo - you could have your graphics people build
something around a magnifiying glass, with your title or slogan inside the
magnifier. Kind of like a detective looking for clues. If you like, I'll
send you a sample. I've used the same technique for a crime workshop my
writers group sponsors.

We focused attention on our large print collection by making a display of
glasses and a sign the read "Give Your Eyes A Rest." That way I could
focus on everyone trying to read at night after working with eyestrain all
day. No one feels that the books are only for "old" people. We also
encourage a lot of circulation by suggesting the large print version of
new releases. They usually have a shorter reserve list.

I haven't had any trouble with people being offended at the idea of needing
large print, but one of the things I have done in newsletter copy and in our
weekly column from time to time is to emphasis the many different types of
people who can benefit from this collection -- kids making the transition
from "chapter books" to the miniscule print of many adult books (esp.
paperbacks); people who want/need to read aloud; those using exercise bikes
and other fitness equipment where the doohickey where you can prop up a book
is sufficiently far away to make regular type difficult to see; commuters
who say they prefer this format when travelling on bumpy busses, etc. I
also make a point of offering large print editions to so-called "regular"
patrons when other copies are out. Many people actually are thrilled to
give it a try and often come back for more.
