I submitted this question before the holidays and received no replies. Now
that we're back into the January grind, perhaps someone will recognize the
story:

I have a patron looking for a book she read about 5 years ago. She thinks
it was new at that time. A teenage boy is suspected of causing the death
of a teenage girl. The patron remembers a car rolling off of a pier. It
was a mystery in the same vein as _Before and After_. The true
circumstances of the girl's death are not revealed until the very end (she
thinks). Thanks in advance.

Jodi Picoult's The Pact deals with a teenage boy being held responsible for
the death of his girlfriend. It's not clear whether he or she pulled the
trigger. The book is like Before and After in that it examines what is
happening to both families and what led to the girls death. It is not five
years old though, original pub. date was 1998.

It's set in New England. The single Dad moved up from NYC. My notes say
something like In Clear. Sorry I didn't keep better notes.
