One author that comes to mind immediately is Joanna Trollope, particularly
the title _The choir_ (the most common American edition is from Random
House, dated 1995).

I've recommended the novels of Barbara Pym to people who've enjoyed Gail
Godwin and specifically mentioned the C of E aspect of Father Melancholy and
Evensong. I do warn them of the British slant; some are put off by it,
others are charmed.

THE BODY IN THE TRANSEPT, by Jeannette Dams. Introduction
to Dorothy Martin mysteries. Main character finds a body in her
church.
THE MARTYR'S CHAPEL, by D. J. Delffs. Introduction to Father
Griffin Reed mysteries. I believe the main character is a
Episcopalian priest.
Either way, they are interesting reads. BYE!

Nora -
I'm pretty sure it is - it was very High Church - and naturally, not
Catholic. I think Episcopal would be the denomination by implication, if not
actually per se.

REC'D: 1/22/01, 1:45 PM
A number of Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels have events
connecting the characters with the Church of England. One, in
particular, The Nine Taylors (possibly my favorite) specifically
involves a church, its priest, and the members of the church.
Kate Gallison has a series about an Episcopal priest in New Jersey,
featuring Mother Lavinia Grey. These are more mystery and less
Episcopalian.
The Rector of Justin, by Louis Auchincloss, is set in a New England prep
school said to be based on St. Paul's School, an Episcopal prep school.
Jan Karon's series, beginning with At Home in Mitford, features an
Episcopal priest.
In terms of appeal factors, I expect The Rector of Justin and The
Bishop's Wife (mentioned in another person's message) would be closer in
terms of style and pacing. Did the person who posted the question make
sure that the patron had also read Father Melancholy's Daughter, to
which Evensong was the sequel?
Would anyone like the list to be compiled? I'll be glad to do so, but
only if at least one other person expresses interest.
