I have a customer looking for books that are similar
to Jesse Stuart's. She particularly enjoys his use of
the Appalachian dialect and is hoping to find other
novels with the same dialect, or ones that give a
strong flavor of that region's language.

I'm not familiar with Jesse Stuart's work, so probably shouldn't
respond...but I will anyway! I just have to recommend Chris Offutt's
collection of short stories, _Kentucky Straight_. Here's a description
from the back cover of the book:

"These riveting, often heartbreaking stories take us through country
that is figuratively and literally unmapped. They are set in a nameless
Appalachian community too small to be called a town, a place where
wanting an education is a mark of ungodly arrogance and dowsing for
water a legitimate occupation; where hunting is not a sport but a means
of survival, pursued with the desperation of a grudge."

While there is some dialect in these stories, Offutt conveys the life of
this small Appalachian community beautifully through his spare, but
powerful, writing. If your patron is looking only for stories that use
the Appalachian dialects, I would not recommend this, but I haven't read
anything else in years that gave me such a strong sense of true
Appalachian life.

Having said that, the other (older) book that had a similar effect on me
was _Storming Heaven_, Denise Giardina's moving novel about the real
life Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, fought between the coal miners of
West Virginia and the hired guns brought in the break the union.
Reviewer Carolyn Chute said, "It's about a war we never learn about in
school because the American government was the bad guy. Every American
should read _Storming Heaven_, and every lover of good books should know
this masterful writer's voice. Anything I read after this will never be
as important." Warning: this book will break your heart.

Janice Holt Giles wrote several novels set in Appalachia. This includes a
trilogy one element of which is "Tara's Healing," also a book which focuses
on the folk music of that region. Sorry I can't provide more titles, it has
been many years since I saw the books. But I do remember that the dialect
played a prominent part in them.

Fred Chappell's books are set there, too, but the dialect is not a strong
part of the works. But, even without that, he really draws you into
believing you are up in the hills and the folklore he weaves into his
stories is wonderful.
