Forgive me for asking a question that is a little off-topic.

I have a patron who bought a used book recently that she loves, but every time she tries to read it, it makes her cough and sneeze. She thinks it might have dust mites or something that is adversely affecting her. Do any of you have any suggestions for her on how she can *clean* this book?

This works for newpapers (for those sensitive to newsprint) so maybe it will
work for a cough/sneeze situation. Heat your oven to 250 degrees and SHUT
IT OFF, then put the book in, flairing the pages as much as possible. Let
the oven cool and this should help the situation. It's probably not dust
mites but mold. Hope this helps!

The patron might also try putting the book outside in the sun.

Or, if she's not averse to using dryer sheets, she could try putting the book
in a bag with a dryer sheet. I've done that with books that are musty.

Though I am not sure what the problem is, I have been told that freezing a
book can sometimes get rid of unwanted beasties. If you want an expert
opinion I would suggest contacting Ellen Cunningham-Kruppa
g<e.cunnk@mail.utexas.edu> or Karen Pavelka <pavelka@mail.utexas.edu>.
They both teach in the Preservation and Conservation Studies program at
the University of Texas at Austin's Graduate School of Library and
Information Science.
