I have a challenging question for all of you. We have a patron who read a novel when she was a teenager 30 years ago. The story was set during the Revolutionary War. She only remembers one scene. Here it is: a young man and a young woman are on opposite sides of the war, and the young woman pours a drink for the man and a ddrink for herself. He suspects that she has tried to poison or drug him, so he says that she must drink the one for him and he will drink the one she poured for herself. She agrees...As the drug takes affect on him, and he is dozing off, he tells her that he loves her. She had anticipated that he would suspect her, so she had drugged the one she poured for herself, and he is impressed by her cleverness (thats why as he's falling asleep he declares his love). He doesn't die- just falls asleep, and the patron thinks that they ended up together. Any ideas of the title or author? I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks in advance!!!

This sounds like one of my favorite J/YA books, The Sherwood Ring, by
Elizabeth Pope. Peggy Graham goes to live with her uncle, who is
obsessed with Revolutionary War history. Here, she is visited by the
ghosts of her ancestors (including the unforgettable Peaceable Sherwood)
who were alive during that period, and who tell fascinating stories of
code-breaking, secret rooms, hidden valuables, and midnight rescues. One
of the stories involves a drugged drink, such as your patron described.
